This unit invites you to frame an individual research project based on research and analysis of an image or object in relation to its cultural context.
Based on the idea that all objects are ‘cultural,’ representing meaning and value in consumer culture, this unit asks you to explore the specific narratives of a single object or image of your choice. You should chose an object or image that is related to your discipline, practice and area of interest.
Through lectures, seminars and tutorials, this unit will explore research methods for contextualizing and analysing your image or object, with the aim of producing a final piece of work that explores the cultural meaning of the image or object. This unit will help you to develop a sustained approach to research, enhancing your knowledge and understanding of the relationship between theory and practice.
You will be challenged to think about abstract concepts as tools to be used in the analysis of examples of visual and material culture. This will further your understanding of how visual design and communication functions in a broader cultural context.
You will produce a visual essay that uses images, visual thinking and reasoning and that is referenced with the Harvard referencing system.

ASSESSMENT BRIEF:
For this unit’s assessment you will demonstrate your learning by constructing a visual essay based on the following task:
Choose a specific image (or object) drawn from history or from contemporary visual culture. The image (or object) that you choose should be from an area that interests you and is relevant to your area of study. It can be something that you are using in a studio project, you can use your research from CTS in the Studio and your research from the Studio in CTS. Using both primary and secondary research you are asked to ‘position’ your image (or object) in relation to contextual, theoretical and critical frameworks.
This should form a visual essay, with images, annotations and quotes. It should be presented in the form of a presentation (using Powerpoint, keynote or other
appropriate software) of 20 slides (excluding title page and bibliogrpahy). Each slide must contain text and images from your research. You should base your visual essay on visual thinking and reasoning, therefore the word count should not exceed 2,000 words (+/- 10%). Your ability to build arguments through visuals and present them visually is an equally important part of this task so avoid text-laden slides.
With reference to contextual, theoretical and critical frameworks you should present an in-depth critical analysis of your chosen image or object. The research demonstrated should strive to be thorough and detailed, with a clear emphasis on both breadth and depth of knowledge. You must use illustrations throughout to support your analysis and you must quote from relevant sources in order to support your argument.
All of your sources must be properly referenced according to academic convention, using the Harvard Method of referencing. A full bibliography must be attached.
Illustrations must be included and analysed.
You must submit your essay on Turnitin by 3pm, Monday 10 January 2022.
It is important that you are aware of the regulations affecting assessment. Please refer to your Student Regulations Handbook for specific details
